Commissioning & Operator Training for Industrial Furnaces

From Delivered System to Production-Ready Asset

Delivering a new system is the penultimate step. The decisive one is commissioning: only when temperature uniformity, process recipes and safety circuits have been qualified and documented, and your personnel are confident operating the system, does the value begin for you.

NTH Therm guides you through complete commissioning, performs all required qualification steps, and hands over a system that delivers reproducible results from the first production cycle.

NTH Therm Commissioning Sequence

Phase 1: Mechanical Installation and Verification

  • Check installation conditions (floor load capacity, clearances, utility connections)
  • Erection and alignment of the system
  • Verification of all mechanical connections, seals and interlocks
  • Initial electrical, gas and cooling connections (where applicable)

Phase 2: Electrical Initial Inspection (DGUV-3)

  • Full DGUV-3 inspection per DIN VDE 0100-600
  • Protective conductor, insulation and functional testing of all safety circuits
  • Issue of inspection certificate

Phase 3: Process Qualification

  • Heat-up test and verification of all heating circuits
  • Temperature uniformity survey (TUS) with multi-point measurement in the working chamber
  • Thermocouple calibration and correction factor determination where required
  • System accuracy test (SAT) for automotive / aerospace processes (CQI-9, AMS2750)
  • Adjustment and testing of all safety functions (over-temperature, door interlock, emergency stop)

Phase 4: Recipe Programming and Process Trials

  • Programming of all process recipes per specification
  • Trial runs with dummy charge where possible
  • Calibration of atmosphere sensors (carburising and protective-gas furnaces)

Phase 5: Documentation and Handover

  • Compilation of all acceptance documents (see FAQ)
  • Handover of source files, wiring diagrams, operating manual
  • Formal acceptance and sign-off

Training Programmes

Basic Operator Training (1 day) For production staff with no prior knowledge: operating concept, touch HMI, recipe management, alarm handling, safety procedures, emergency behaviour.

Advanced Operator Training (0.5 days) For experienced operators: recipe optimisation, data analysis, diagnosis of common faults, quality assurance.

Maintenance and Service Training (1–2 days) For maintenance personnel: PLC architecture and diagnostics, fault diagnosis in TIA Portal, replacement of heating elements and thermocouples, safety systems, documentation.

Refresher Training After staff changes, after modernisations or after extended shutdown periods. Available on request, also remotely.

Commissioning of Third-Party Furnaces

We carry out commissioning and qualification for furnaces from other manufacturers, particularly when used for quality-critical processes in automotive or aerospace supply chains. Prerequisite: provision of complete technical documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What needs to be covered during commissioning of an industrial furnace?

Beyond mechanical and electrical installation, process qualification is essential: temperature calibration (thermocouple calibration, TUS – Temperature Uniformity Survey), programming and testing of all process recipes, and documentation. For automotive or aerospace applications, system accuracy classes (SAT per AMS2750 / CQI-9) must be demonstrated.

What training formats does NTH Therm offer?

We offer operator training on site at the customer's premises, training at our facility in Rülzheim, and on request digital training for geographically distributed teams. Duration: 0.5–2 days depending on scope.

What documentation do I receive from commissioning?

Temperature uniformity survey report (TUS), thermocouple calibration certificate, PLC source files and data backup, recipe documentation, CE declaration of conformity, DGUV-3 initial inspection report, operating manual and wiring diagrams.

Can I book training for my maintenance department?

Yes, we offer separate maintenance and service training for technical staff: control architecture, PLC diagnostics, fault diagnosis, replacement of heating elements and thermocouples, safety systems and documentation.

Do you calibrate for CQI-9 and AMS2750?

Yes. For customers in the automotive supply chain (CQI-9) and aerospace (AMS2750 / NADCAP) we carry out system accuracy tests (SAT) and temperature uniformity surveys (TUS) and document results in audit-ready format.
